Home Defenders Termite & Pest Management Inc FAQ By Mike Nolan

Have a termite and pest management related question? We have the answer. Check out these FAQ and give us a call today for more information!

  • What do you charge?

We offer free inspections, but don’t give prices for specific pests because every infestation—and solution—is unique.

  • If your tech comes to my home and I accept his proposal, can he start the job immediately?

    That depends on the pest.

    >> For ants and spiders, our techs are ready to treat immediately.

    >> For rodents, our techs can start trapping immediately, but the job may require weeks to be completed.

    >> For animal control that may require live traps, our techs may not be able to start for a few days.

    >> For bats, our techs may not be able to start for a few days.

    >> For termites swarming out of a concrete slab floor, we may not be able to start for a week or so.

  • Do you guys offer termite inspections?

We’re not currently performing termite (wood-destroying organism) inspections for home sales.

  • Do I need a termite inspection when I buy/sell a home?

The State of California has no requirement that a home be inspected before sale.

Sometimes, lenders require a termite clearance before approving a home loan. For more info, contact a real estate professional.

  • Do we have termites in the mountains?

We primarily have two types of termites: a) subterranean, which live underground, and tunnel up to homes. b) dampwood, which lives in the moist parts of stumps and logs.

For the record, we don’t often see drywood termites in the mountains. They’re the ones pest companies fumigate with a big circus tent over the home.

  • Do carpenter ants eat wood?

No, they tunnel in wood to make nests. Ants can’t digest wood.

  • Can ground squirrels/gophers undermine the foundation of my house?

I’m no structural engineer, but I think it is highly unlikely that ground squirrels/gophers could threaten the structural integrity of a foundation. In thirty-five years of pest management, I’ve never seen that happen.

  • What is the most destructive pest in the mountains?

Wood rot, caused by fungus, spawns more wood damage than all other pests combined.

  • Do you treat for gophers?

Like all pest companies, we do the best we can. Gophers are tenacious survivors.

  • Are there brown recluse spiders in the mountains?

No, they’re not native to California.

  • How do you handle rodent infestations?

Generally, we exterminate them with snap traps, then seal the openings they use to enter the home.

  • Are there fleas in the mountains?

I can count on one hand the number of flea jobs I’ve done in my thirty-five-year career. Fleas don’t thrive in the mountains.

  • Do you treat bed bugs?

No, we don’t get many phone calls for bed bugs, so we have no experience treating them. For bed bugs, you’d be better off finding a company that specializes in them.

  • How do you stop woodpeckers?

The best treatment is changing the siding/trim to a type that they can’t attack. Otherwise, we put sheet metal over their holes and hang shiny mylar tape to try and scare them off.

  • Do you offer a regular pest treatment program?

We offer a quarterly (every 90 days) treatment program. The customer can cancel anytime.

  • Do you relocate bees?

We love bees, they’re a necessary part of the environment, but currently, we exterminate them if they invade your home.
